The Best Adaptation?
In comparison to all other adaptations I think Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation is the best. One of the main reasons for this is the faithfulness to the source material. Now, a slight caveat as many people still feel like it is not perfect. At this time I think it’s also fair to give a little bit of grace to Denis. There is only so much you can do to adapt a book such as Dune into a movie format. I think given the previous attempts he did quite well. There are some characters I wish got more time, but I also think it’s just as fair to argue that those characters did not have the same stature as Paul and the other ensemble cast.
Talking about the visuals is the easiest way to critique this movie in a positive light. The camera work is stunning and I think even people who disliked the movie cannot argue against this fact. Denis Villeneuve has shown time and again how great he is at directing large scale worlds with a variety of different aspects that need to be comprehended. Watching this movie it feels as if the camera is always where it needs to be.
The sound track of Dune is absolutely insane. Hans Zimmer is a generational talent when it comes to composing. I believe there are a couple YouTube video interviews up about how he approached the movie and I would definitely recommend them. It is so obvious he cares so much about making this movie feel alive. The sounds feel so real and yet so alien. The sounds perfectly encapsulate how it would feel to step on the planet Dune.
Overall the Dune movie inspired me so much not just as an adaptation but as a visual showcase that Hollywood is still capable of producing masterpieces. In a time where there is so much visal slop, I love that Dune takes a serious approach to adapting SCIFI and treats the audience like adults. AKA, not spoon feeding us information. So much of Dune is showcased through subtle visuals and that makes the movie feel worth watching again and again.
